10 Staycation IdeasPosted by | 05.29.2018
School is out, and that means it's time to occupy the family. We've compiled a list of 10 staycation ideas, so you can stay close to home but still have fun adventures with the family! From staying overnight in a nearby town, to camping in the backyard, we've got you covered.
1. Night Out
Something as simple as staying in a hotel for a night can really change things up! You can do this in your own city, but do opt for staying in one you don't see on a regular basis.
2. Aquarium Wonders
Google a local aquarium in your area. Don't have one? Take the kids to a pond, river or stream and go fishing.
3. Sight Seeing
Pick a city nearby that you don't venture to often, and act like tourists! Pick up city maps, what to do guides, and search online. Stay in a hotel if you can, or just come home that evening. Pack car ride games to make it feel like a vacation.
4. S'mores Anyone?
Find a park nearby that offers camping sites, and pitch a tent for a night. Not the roughing it type? Take it to the backyard! Roast marsh mellows and fire grill some hot dogs, then watch for some shooting stars. You can also try glamping. PS. Don't forget the bug spray!
5. Beach Trip
Taking a day trip (or two) to the beach is a great way to unwind and refresh. Build sandcastles, bury dad... but watch out for jellyfish! PS. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat!
*Off regular priced swimwear
6. Neighborhood Party
Bust out grandma's ice cream maker and plan a neighborhood party. Try toppings you never have. Get the kids involved, making homemade invitations. Have neighbors you don't know well? Use this as an excuse to get to know each other! Don't have an ice cream maker? Buy different flavors from the store, or check out the below recipe.
7. Go to the Theater
Instead of the movies, check your local theater and see what plays or concerts they are hosting. Just like movies, they're a great way to escape, and be transported somewhere else for an hour or two.
8. Take Me Out to the Ballgame
Every state has sports teams. Depending on what time of year you choose your staycation, check out your local baseball, basketball, football, hockey. This can mean professional teams all the way down to a local league.
9. Visit a Library
Libraries often host an array of events during the summer. Check out your local library and see what adventures you can find! Most offer some some form of summer reading programs, kids storytime, even arts & crafts and book parties.
10. Day at the Museum
Visit a local museum and make it a day trip! Explore the museums in your area and see which ones have special exhibits, like mummies or dinosaurs! Most museums are located in downtown areas, so you can go for a walk before or after, to explore the city. You might even find somewhere cool to eat for lunch or dinner.
